Now, you must be interested in the technology behind AT&T TV and how all of this internet-based TV system works along with cable TV and streaming TV. We have this explainer guide for you on this topic to get you all the information on the technology behind AT&T TV and what exactly AT&T TV is.

What is AT&T TV and How It Works?

So all the TV or video service provider companies are now moving towards this digital streaming era where they are all launching their own streaming services. AT&T is basically the starter of this trend with their AT&T TV service they started offering at the start of last year. They are offering an internet-based TV streaming service with various packages that we have explained before here and will be explaining more of them further in this guide.

AT&T TV Technology

As I have mentioned above, AT&T TV is basically an internet-based TV service where you can get all the TV programming available on AT&T TV directly on your TV or any other device. This internet-based streaming is done by using IP (Internet Protocol) technology to deliver videos. As your devices like computer, TV, smartphone, and tablet are all connected to the internet, so using IP technology to stream videos can make it all seamless by getting all your wireless devices to share data and work together more closely which gives you more control over all the devices and service that you are getting.

You will be getting AT&T TV service through a streaming box that is installed and attached to your TV and an ethernet port.

Streaming Box

Streaming Box is the internet device that will receive internet-based TV video signals from AT&T TV servers and will give you access to all the AT&T TV services all the time, anywhere, and on any compatible device.

These streaming boxes are called Over-the-top (OTT) devices which deliver video and integrated content to your TV through the Internet, and this is a game-changing technology. Along with TV, you can also play games, watch online videos, listen to music, and can also use many third-party apps on your TV set without anything else connected to your TV.

You will get the whole Google Play Suite with thousands of Google Play Store apps and Google services preloaded. So you can call this streaming box a TV programming devices as well, which can give you AT&T TV streaming with UHD 4K support, and can be used as a smart home system controller to control many smart devices connected through the same internet connection like smart lights and thermostats.

As we are going through the qualities of the streaming box, one thing to keep in mind is that it is very simple to install where you don’t need a technician or any special person to come to your house just to install a TV box, and you can do that yourself where you just need to plug it in, and the AT&T TV streaming box will self install everything necessary.

Sharing your Account

Sharing an account is a no brainer in the streaming services world, as we all know about Netflix 😉 and don’t worry AT&T TV has you covered here as well. You can use your one AT&T TV account on three different devices simultaneously to stream content.

Internet Speed

There is no minimum internet speed cap mentioned by AT&T officially, but as they are offering UHD 4K resolution, there must be a reasonable internet speed available to get the best experience of the service so we recommend an internet speed of 8 Mbps to be the minimum cap for one stream to get the optimal result.

Now if you are doing multiple streams, say three streams on one internet connection then you need at least 25 Mbps internet connection for optimum result and without any lag, stutter, or loading issue.

Also keep in mind that AT&T TV has a limit of 3 streams per subscription and the minimum internet speed we have mentioned here of 25 Mbps is for 3 concurrent streams of non-4K resolution. For 4K streams and to get the maximum best experience of AT&T TV we recommend a fiber optic internet connection with a minimum speed of 100 Mbps or above.

Offerings from AT&T TV

There is a huge on-demand library for AT&T TV streaming service with more than 55,000 titles available on demand. You also get the functionality of cloud DVR storage of 500 hours, where you can record and save TV content for 90 days before they get deleted.

Other than their ordinary TV channel offerings, they also give you the option to get premium channel subscriptions which will give you access to exclusive stuff like HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and top offerings from sports like ESPN, ESPN 2, NBA League Pass, FS1, and NBCSN.

Now we will get into the pricing of all the TV packages that AT&T is offering, these prices that we are mentioning down below are all-inclusive of taxes.

  • The cheapest AT&T TV subscription that you can get is $59.99 per month called AT&T Entertainment.
  • AT&T Choice is priced at $64.99 per month.
  • Xtra package is $74.99 per month
  • The ultimate package is $79.99 per month
  • Plus package is $110 per month
  • Max package is $130 per month

All of these packages have ESPN, NBCSN, and Fox Sports 1 along with all the local and regional channels. AT&T is not only successful with its market competitive individual offerings like AT&T TV, AT&T Internet, and AT&T wireless phone but the whole ecosystem itself gives consumers a full fledge package to cater to all their needs with one bundle.

This means you can combine your AT&T TV with their internet service, as they are offering top-of-the-class fiber optic internet service in most of the regions and this will also give you some bundle discounts. If you want to know more about these bundles, you can check our AT&T bundles guide here

For a rough idea, we can tell you that you will be able to save around $20 per month if you bundle AT&T TV and internet together along with getting unlimited data access worth $30 per month. The last reward that you will get if you order an AT&T TV+Internet bundle is an AT&T Visa Reward Card. We have explained all of that in our AT&T bundles guide.

Personalizing Your AT&T TV

The process to get your AT&T TV to work to your liking is very easy and it all starts with you signing into your google account on the streaming box. If you didn’t activate the google services at the star, you can do that at any time by just using voice commands. You just need to press the mic button and say “show me my calendar” or “activate google assistant” and you will be prompted to sign in with your Google account to proceed further.

Voice Controls

Voice commands make the AT&T TV experience a little more handsfree and hassle-free, you can use your TV remote to issue voice commands and these commands can be used to open apps on your TV or look for a particular movie or TV program.

Keep in mind that you will be using Google assistant as your voice assistant, you can issue a voice command by pressing the mic button on your remote, a blue light will appear on the remote, and then google assistant will start listening to your commands.

This feature will give you access to all the AT&T TV inventory of unlimited TV shows, movies, games, and even live TV with just your voice. In total, there more than 50,000 TV shows, movies, and games available on AT&T TV. You will also be able to check your calendar, check traffic and weather, change channels, turn on and off subtitles, and get live news.

Smart Devices

Another way to personalize your AT&T TV is by adding various smart devices available for AT&T TV. As we have mentioned before, it uses Internet Protocol, so you can use AT&T TV to access other smart devices in your house. All you need to do is to install the Google Home app on your smartphone or tablet, it is available for both iOS and Android.

Then sign in to Google Home app with the same google account you used to sign in to AT&T TV. Then just go through the on-screen instructions and add the smart devices in your home and your preferred music streamers and you are good to go. After the whole process, you only need to use the mic button to say the command you want.

AT&T TV – Internet Based TV vs. Cable

This has been a debate since the new Internet Based TV streaming services took off a couple of years back. The traditional cable TV uses a one-way cable or satellite broadcast system while the newer internet-based TV system uses improved and better technology that enhances the flexibility and creativity within the network. Internet Protocol television network technology is a new way forward for internet-based TV which enables two-way interactivity.

With this new two-way IPTV network, viewers get more flexibility with the content as there are many more options available to personalize and control different aspects of the whole viewing experience along with the control of other smart home devices.

On this network technology, you will be able to interact with all the AT&T receiver all at once as they are all connected to one high-speed internet connection. Along with all of this technology, you also get Ultra High definition 4K Cloud DVR storage with all the compatible devices.

AT&T TV – Internet Based TV vs. Streaming TV Only

Streaming TV is a very basic phenomenon that most of the on-demand streaming services offer at different price points but watching AT&T TV is quite different than just streaming TV. AT&T TV has more comprehensive programming with premium channels, subscriptions, and bundles.

With IP technology, your TV communicates with other services and provided by AT&T which will bring you integrated high-speed internet-based content and many extra features right on your TV screen. For example, you can get your flicker library right on your TV screen with AT&T Online Photos. AT&T internet-based TV also offers live TV service with breaking news, 40,000 on-demand titles, Live TV, and 5000+ apps with the liked of Netflix and Pandora right from Google Play Store.
